The Malts-List Classification  |  27.12.99

On 22nd November 1999, as a result of the publishing of the Millenium Malt Classification on scotchwhisky.com, a request was made to fellow enthusiasts to parallel the criteria put to the professional experts to see how amateur experts would report. The question put was :

send a list of your top 20 favourites for the millenium using these three criteria

  • The quality of the malt
  • The consistency of that quality over time
  • Focus on the main brand expression
These criteria matched exactly the first two of the MMC, but excluded "How the distillery is judged in general by malt whisky writers" and omitted "the respective market" from the main brand expression question (previously "Focus on the main brand expression in each respective market")

The results, below, are from the grading of 59 whiskies by 12 amateur experts. Interestingly only two whiskies were scored by everyone, The Macallan and Talisker.
