The Millennium Malt Classification  |  8.11.99

Late in 1998 an attempt was made to get an objective overview (allowing for individual preferences whilst seeking an element of consensus) of the great malt whiskies as we approach the third millennium. The Millennium Malt Classification (MMC) is the result of that objective research. It is a valuable tool when benchmarking one's own preferences against the collective views of the great malt whisky writers.

The results shown below represent the views of five of the world's greatest malt whisky specialists (the order of the writers in the table is not the order in which they appear below). These scores reflect the overall status of the malt brands based on :-

  • The quality of the malt
  • The consistency of that quality over time
  • How the distillery is judged in general by malt whisky writers
  • Focus on the main brand expression in each respective market
The MMC is intended to draw together the diverse views on malt whisky and assist consumers when assessing price, quality and availability. When voting, each of the malt whisky writers were asked to rank the top 20 Scotch Malt brands (i.e. their favourite received 20 points).
