My wife gave me a bottle of Caol Ila Vintage 1980 for Christmas. At 55.4%, it is quite powerful. It is definitely an Islay malt, smoky and peaty, very salty. It may lack the sherry softness and some complexity, but it is a single malt to be reckoned with. A very manly Scotch.
