Pagodas of Scotland

C.Doig, architect and civil engineer of the late nineteenth century, is the acclaimed father of the Scotch Whisky Pagoda. His picturesque pagodas were not just ornamental, they had a particularly practical function by acting as ventilators to draw the smoke from the peat fires below up through the perforated kiln floor, where the barley was spread to dry and await the aromatic infusion of the peat smoke.

The Pagodas of Scotland can be found in the Highlands, Lowlands, mountains and glens of Scotland. This is the first attempt by anyone to visit and record for posterity these unique Pagodas, which give the Scotch Whisky Distilleries their distinctive and romantic appearance. Their place in the Industy's history is overshadowed only by the importance of Scotch Whisky itself.

This project is an exciting and, some would say, a late attempt to find, record, and illustrate for posterity the unique and disappearing phenomena of The Pagodas of Scotland.
