Randy Abernethy asked from Hollywood:
Hi Charlie!
I was recently in a favorite local liquor store picking out a couple of Cadenhead's for my collection when I ran across "The Century of Malts". The store manager assured me that the President of Universal, who was somehow affiliated with Chivas Brothers products... demanded that they keep this Scotch in stock. A blend of 100 malts!? Really?! It was expensive enough. I stuck with a Cadenhead's Port Ellen and a Cadenhead's Highland Park. Can this "Century of Malts" be any good? Should it cost as much as a Cadenhead's?
Many thanks,
Randy

Charlie Says:

Dear Randy,

I have a bottle of 'Century' in front of me as I write. It was Chivas' answer to J&B's 'Ultima' (a blend of 128 malts and grains). They are curiosities, conceits, a considerable test for the blender, designed for Far Eastern markets. Frankly, I think that when you throw together so many whiskies the flavour becomes 'muddy' - like mixing all the colours on an artists palate. You did well to stick with Cadenhead's!

Best wishes,

Charles MacLean
