The Whisky
The lightness of Lowland malts gives them a different appeal from the heavily flavoured Highland malts. However following the arrival of consistant and well-made blended whiskies. After about 1870, the entire output of the Lowland distilleries went for blending and only two survive today.

The Distillery
Auchentoshan is unique in being created by 'triple distillation', formerly a traditional Lowland practice, introduced because it helped the spirit to mature more quickly.

Auchentoshan Distillery still draws it's water from the Kirkpatrick Hills, as it did when it was founded, as early as 1800. It was largely rebuilt after the Second World War and re-equiped in 1974. A decade later it was bought by Stanley P. Morrison & Co. to complement its Highland and Islay distilleries.
